Outdoor Lighting – Strips vs. Pods: The Best Choice for Your Home

Different Types of Lights

At ODon Technologies, we offer two different types of permanent outdoor lighting. There are some advantages and disadvantages to each, with completely different looks depending on your style. We have included a breakdown of each, which would best benefit your home and real-life examples of homes we have done, showcasing each option.

Pod Style Outdoor Lighting

Pod-style outdoor lighting is the most common form available in Red Deer and across Alberta. Everyone, including us, does it, and they do it for a reason. It will make your house look amazing. Between the lights themselves and the glow they cast across the siding on your house, it really makes your house pop and shine at all times of the year.

We chose to use the Govee Outdoor Lights Pro for our pod lighting. They offer the best lighting per price on the market, and they are the number 1 selling brand in North America for a reason. Designed to reflect off the siding of your house more than similar brands, it is an amazing look for your outdoor lighting! They can be installed in 2 different locations, leading to similar, but distinct looks across your house.

Inside of the soffit

The main way we install lights, and the way they were designed to be installed, is 2-4″ from the inside of the soffit. This installation method allows the unique look of our pod lighting. It allows light cones to appear on the siding of the home, giving a unique look you can’t find with any other brand.

Outside of the soffit

The alternative way of installing the pod lights is on the outside of the soffit. This gives a more general washed look, rather than the light cone look. It has the added bonus of looking a lot closer to traditional Christmas lighting. While it isn’t how the lights are designed to be installed, it can still improve the lighting of your house drastically!

Advantages

One of the biggest advantages of the pod-style outdoor lighting is the cost. It is less expensive than the strip style and under half the price of all other Red Deer permanent outdoor lighting installations.

Another is the versatility. While the strip-style can be placed anywhere, we only offer it on the outside of the soffit, under the fascia. The pod lighting is more versatile and can be placed almost anywhere on the soffit.

Next, serviceability. The pod-style lights are a lot easier to service yourself after the warranty ends. Cut one pod out and splice another one in its place. No souldering, no fancy tools. If you’re comfortable at heights, it will take a matter of minutes for you to conduct the repair yourself.

Finally, the unique look. No other outdoor lighting product available can offer the unique siding effects of our pod lighting. So if you love how they look (which you will), the only place to get them is through us!

Disadvantages

While the advantages far outweigh the disadvantages, there are some disadvantages to be made aware of.

The first is the light spacing. Many competitors’ pod-style lighting has 5 to 7 inches between lights. To achieve the cone style, ours are famously known for the spacing, which is much larger, at 16 inches between lights.

The second is the visible wire. Many other permanent outdoor lighting installers will put their lights in a track to hide the connections. We will have either black or white wire between them. We do offer tracks as well for our outside of the soffit installations, but standard pricing includes having the wiring exposed.

Strip Style Outdoor Lighting

As the only provider of professional strip-style lighting in Red Deer and possibly all of Alberta, strip lighting is unique. Rather than individual pods or spotlights on your house, it is the look of one solid bar of light.

While many commercial businesses have had this style of lighting for years, we have brought it to the residential world. Offering a unique lighting pattern that no one else on your block has, strip-style lighting is the most unique way to light your house.

The ODon Technologies Outdoor Lighting Difference

At ODon Technologies, we do things differently. You’re guaranteed a professional install at every moment. There are many things that set us apart.

Warranty

As outlined on our warranty page, every installation we do comes with a 3-year no-questions-asked warranty. This includes parts and labour. So if your lights quit working for any reason in the 3 years after installation, we will come and fix it at no cost to you. You will never have to deal with the manufacturer, and you’ll never get any surprise fees.

Pricing

We are the cheapest around. Not because we use cheap products or don’t care about our customers, but because we take the opposite approach. Unlike our competitors, we choose not to take giant profit margins just to pad our bank account. We accomplish this by spending next to nothing on advertising. We let our work speak for itself, and utilize word of mouth from our hundreds of happy clients to keep the business growing and staying strong.

ODon Technologies Google Reviews

Proof

We have now installed our lighting on hundreds of homes in the Red Deer and Central Alberta area, and have nothing but 5-star reviews to show for it. This is because we take pride in our work. Before we put a single screw in, we meet face-to-face with you and make sure you’re happy with the installation, where it will be installed, and what the final product will look like. We treat your home like our own, and proof lies in the testimonials and reviews we have accumulated.
