Govee Light Clips – Should You Use Them?

Govee Light Clips. What are they? Where do you find them? Do you even need them?

Permanent Outdoor Lights are quickly spreading everywhere, and for good reason! They make houses look amazing, they are a permanent solution for lights, and they are DIY-friendly. As part of this they come with mounting equipment in the box. But is it enough?

What’s in the Box?

In the box for your lights you will find that each light has sticky “permanent” 3M tape on the back. This tape is designed to be placed onto your soffit, and after a little bit of pressure, adhere to the surface permanently. While this is great in principle, in reality it doesn’t work as advertised.

Because of this you will also find small Govee light clips designed to go along the wire to keep the wire in place. While this is a solution that will stop the wire from falling, it is not ideal for permanent installation.

The style of Govee light clip that comes in the box is designed for perfect scenarios. Ideal temperature all year long, using clips as back up in case anything goes wrong. The biggest issue with these standard clips however is that when the cable falls it can fall out of the clip, as its only secured on one side.

What’s Needed?

What can we do to fix this? The most obvious option is installing aftermarket clips. For several reasons:

Multiple Screws

The most obvious advantage to aftermarket Govee light clips is the use of multiple screws to attach it to the soffit. By using multiple screws you aren’t relying on one screw on one side of the line if anything happens. With a screw on each side, even if one doesn’t grab, or comes out of the soffit, you still have another used to hold everything.

Colour Matched Screws

Next, because aftermarket clips have you provide your own screws this gives you the ability to colour match your screws to your soffit. This ability to colour match lets you have as seamless of a look with the lights on your house as you can.

Holding the Light

Additionally, because the aftermarket Govee light clips are designed to hold the light itself rather than the wire it provides less stress on the setup. Using the stock clips, if ever a light unsticks from your soffit it will put all of its weight on the wire clip. This can cause sagging in the line, and, if enough lights come loose, entire sections fall down.

Designed for Winter

Lastly, Canadian winters can be harsh. By installing clips on your light it insures that you don’t leave your lights staying on your house up to chance. By taking mother nature out of the equation and securing the lights permanently
